Conhecer a história da Universidade de Coimbra é conhecer a história de Portugal. D. Afonso Henriques viveu aqui no Palácio Real, ainda não existia a Universidade, e foi aqui que ficou Rei e aqui nasceram os reis da primeira dinastia de Portugal. A emblemática Sala dos Capelos é a mesma sala do trono do primeiro rei de Portugal, e foi nesta sala que efetivamente começou a história de Portugal com as ordens de D. Afonso Henriques.
